Someone to talk to

The Arab League offers a comprehensive solution in order to end the Jewish-Arab conflict.

This is not today's headline. This offer was made by the Arab League five years ago, at its March 2002 Beirut summit.

The document that was presented at the summit determines that a just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East is the strategic option of all Arab countries and invites Israel to do the same.

The Arab League Initiative calls for an end to the Israeli-Arab conflict and for the full normalization of relationships between Israel and the 22 member states of the Arab League - on condition that Israel withdraws from lands occupied in 1967; allows the establishment of an independent Palestinian state; and accepts a just solution to the Palestinian refugee problem.

The Israeli government chose not the respond to the offer. The only official reference to the initiative appeared in a 2003 document entitled 'Fourteen Comments on the Road Map', in which Israel demanded the removal of all references to the Saudi and Arab League Initiatives, from Road Map documents.

The majority of the Israeli media ignored the Initiative. As a result the Israeli public generally is not aware of the agreement's existence, and those who have heard of it have very little information regarding its contents.

Because of this, we decided upon the establishment of a new public movement charged with promoting and publicizing the Arab League Initiative amongst the Israeli public and with building public pressure on the Israeli government to enter negotiations based on the League agreement.

We believe that, as in the past, only significant public pressure will force the Israeli government to stop burying its head in the sand and to move forward towards the end of the conflict.

Why? Because peace is achievable and there is someone to talk to.

RPM begins its campaign on March 28 - the fifth anniversary of the Arab League Initiative - determined that we will not be forced to suffer another five bloody years before negotiations begin.

We invite you to join us and add your voice to the drive for regional peace.
